Field of Interest

Green Catalysis and Reaction Engineering

My research interests center largely on applied catalysis for environmentally friendly, energy- and material-efficient chemical processes. The research goal is to search for and develop the underlying chemical and engineering principles governing catalysis, and to make use of such knowledge to design novel and efficient processes. The research approach has four major components. First suitable catalytic materials are selected by evaluating the activity, selectivity and longevity. Then reaction mechanism is studied using a number of techniques, including GC-MS, TPD, XPS, X-ray diffraction, and in situ infrared spectroscopy to characterize adsorbates and potential reaction intermediates so as to understand the fundamental processes. After a suitable reactor is determined according to the process characteristics, the intrinsic kinetics model and the diffusion models are established to simulate the catalyst-reactor performance. Finally, the above information is integrated and is then utilized to improve the catalyst and the reactor.

Another line of my research focuses on multifunctional reactors, which are Catalytic Distillation Structure, Liquid-Solid Moving Bed Reactor and Circulating Fluidized Bed Reactor.
