He graduated from Department of Engineering Chemistry at Tsinghua University in 1963 and served as an academic staff there since then. His main research field is separation science and technology, especially Solvent Extraction. Based on systematic studies of transfer phenomena, modeling and scale-up of separation equipments, he concentrated himself on bridging the gap between fundamental research and industrial application and gained several theoretical and practical achievements. By using advanced measurement technology and CFD simulation, he probed the mathematic models of complex separation processes and their intensification approaches, resulting in innovation of high efficiency packings and advances equipments for solvent extraction, absorption and etc. His creative research works solved many engineering problems and produced significant economic and social benefits. He is very active on the study of Greenhouse Gas CO2 capture recent years. 

He received 3 National, 3 international and 16 Provincial or Ministerial Awards of Science and Technical. He is the author of more than 250 publications and 14 patents. He has supervised more than 30 PhD students.

He is the vice Director of Chinese Ecological Economics society, Director of Chinese Society of Circular Economy, Fellow of the Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China, Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry, UK. He is the editor-in-chief of the Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering and the associate editor-in-chief of several Chinese Chemical Engineering Journals.
